Biodynamic Production Offers a Look at the Future of Fine Wine

This absence of man-made products and implementation of a near-century-old series of farming techniques has made Rudy Marchesi and his thriving winery a defining example of the growing, debated, and misunderstood practice of Biodynamic farming. Today, 45 wineries across the U.S. produce around 183,000 cases of Biodynamic wine annually and certification-whether Biodynamic, organic, or otherwise-makes a difference: According to a 2016 Wine Journal of Economics study, “ecocertified” wine increases a bottle’s score by an average of 4.1 points.

With a farm license, mead-makers who use 100 percent New York honey will qualify for these benefits: They’d be allowed to offer onsite tastings, sell their products by the glass in their tasting rooms (in addition to takeout packages), offer other New York farm-produced beer, wine, cider and spirits and open branch locations.
