Cornell University researchers are working on a project that will give grape growers access to digital maps detailing the health of their vineyards at a level never before achieved. The project, led by Terry Bates, director of the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Lab in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), received $6 million in federal funding.“The purpose of the project is to be able to measure and manage the natural spatial variability in vineyards,” Bates says.Mobile sensors are hooked up to tractors or ATVs while growers perform
The effect of different kinds of pesticide residues in grapes on alcoholic fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae was evaluated. Among four types of pesticides added into the grape slurry, omethoate, triadimefon and cyhalothrin did not inhibit the alcoholic fermentation at their proposed spraying concentration of 0.21, 0.10 and 0.10 g L−1, respectively, whereas chlorothalonil concentration above 0.03 g L−1 behaved significantly negative influence on both S. cerevisiae growth and alcoholic fermentation efficiency. When the chlorothalonil concentration was lower than 0.01 g L−1, the fermentation proceeded smoothly without any degradation of chlorothalonil. Considering the cumulative toxicity and adverse

The present work aimed at the recovery and characterization of polyphenolic compounds extracted from red grape pomace (Vitis vinifera L.), a winemaking by-product. Polyphenolic compounds of wet (WP) and dried (DP) red pomace were recovered by enzymatic digestions and ethanol-based extractions. Fungamyl and Celluclast enzymes were found to be the most effective in enhancing polyphenol release from WP. WP samples showed the highest capacity of releasing polyphenols with 2h control 24°C and 2h 1% Celluclast resulting as the best treatments. A significantly lower amount of polyphenols was recovered from DP

While it’s still too soon to declare complete eradication, no European Grapevine Moths (EGVM) have been found in Napa County since 2013.Napa County Agricultural Commissioner Greg Clark credits a joint effort between the grape and wine industries and the federal, state, and local governments for the remarkable control of this pest over the last several years.“This program started with the initial detection in the fall of 2009, and what was quickly identified was that we needed to bring together subject matter experts on this pest, because it was the first
The botanical origin, toast level and ellagitannin content of oak chips in a model wine solution have been studied in terms of their influence on oxygen consumption. French oak chips released significantly higher amounts of ellagitannins than American oak chips at any toast level. The release of ellagitannins by oak chips decreased as the toast level increased in the French oak but this trend was not so clear in American oak. Oxygen consumption rate was clearly related to the level of released ellagitannins. Therefore, oak chips should be chosen for
The 10th Ministerial Conference of the WTO finished on Saturday night in Nairobi with a package of agreements the WTO itself calls “historic”. Considering that some believed that the WTO was severely deadlocked and almost dead, this might be true. Looking at the expectations and objectives that were set out at the beginning of the Doha Round in 2001, it can, however, also be argued that many of the objectives set out fourteen years ago have still not been achieved. This is admittedly also due to changes in the global

With the Doha Round finally out of the way, WTO members must decide how to proceed with unfinished business and new issues. This column argues for re-thinking the WTO approach to tariff cutting based on insights drawn from recent research. The next time around, deals may be more likely to be struck if emerging economies negotiate tariff cuts among themselves, reciprocally – as the original GATT members did in 1947.< http://pinboard.in/ http://pinboard.in/u:WorldTradeLaw/b:d88839ed6faf/ http://www.voxeu.org/article/bargaining-tariffs-post-doha-wto-insights-research

Stem cell therapies are important treatment methodologies used in many areas of experimental or clinical medicine. In recent studies of cancer models, Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) suppressed the growth of cancer cells. However, also in some studies, stem cell treatments have been shown to induce cancer formation, increase tumor volume, induce the formation of new vessels, and lead to cancer invasion. The presence of MSC-secreted cytokines and their effects on cancer cells limits the reliability of MSC-based treatments. Resveratrol (trans-3,5,4′-trihydroxystilbene), an antioxidant found in red wine, has been shown to
