Winesellers, Ltd. Targets 1-Million-Case Mark

Illinois-based importer and marketer Winesellers Ltd. has seen growth across much of its 700,000-case portfolio lately, spurred on by labels falling within the $10-$15 tier. Among the brands leading the charge is Zuccardi, an Argentine label that saw its depletions grow by 21.4% last year and now sits at around 44,000 cases.

In China, there’s a new crop of connoisseurs as taste for wine grows

With domestic producers winning prizes and top tasting competition held there last week, country is tipped to become second-largest consumer of wine. More than 300 experts from around the world gathered at a luxury hotel in Beijing last weekend to taste 9,000 wines from some 50 countries. After sniffing, tasting and spitting the various vintages, they recorded their notes on touch screen tablets for the 25th Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, which awards coveted gold and silver medals that producers can then tag on their bottles.

Champagne growers hit by violent hailstorm

A violent hailstorm hit the Champagne region on Saturday 12 May. Growers reported hailstones five centimetres in diameter raining down on vines in Côte des Bar, in the south-east of the Champagne region and predominantly planted with Pinot Noir. Early estimates suggested 500 hectares of vineyards were damaged. The hail corridor extended from Les Riceys to Vitry-le-Croisé, with the village of Neuville being the most badly affected.
